Thunderbird
Fleet 5 – 2007 Report
Fleet 5 experienced a rollercoaster
year in 2007 highlighted by great sailing weather and tight racing.
The Thunderbird Twilight
Series consisted of 13 races, running from June to September, with seven boats competing during the season. Atomic Salsa (Geoff Youngman) earned third; Mysterious Ways (Steve Kavanagh)
2nd and Chikanery (Sean Kane) first.
The Fleet 5 Championship
and Mass Bay Sailing Assoc. Championship
were each comprised of races from a mix of the Lipton Cup Regatta, Quincy Bay Race Week, Make-A-Wish Regatta (Atlantic Districts)
and the Spirit Series.
Lipton Cup: 1. Chikanery; 2. Mysterious Ways; 3. Flying Gull (Ken MacLeod).
Quincy
Bay Race Week: 1. Mysterious Ways; 2. Atomic
Salsa; 3. Amr’a (Ethan Gilson).
Make-A-Wish/Atlantic Districts:
1. Chikanery; 2. Mysterious Ways; 3. Thunderation (Don Kavanagh)
Spirit Series: 1. Atomic Salsa; 2. Chikanery; 3. Mysterious Ways
Fleet 5 Championship:
1. Mysterious Ways; 2. Chikanery; 3. Atomic Salsa
Mass.
Bay Sailing Assoc. Championship: 1. Chikanery;
2. Atomic Salsa; 3. Mysterious Ways
For the first time in recent
memory, Thunderbirds finished out of the money at the Great Chase Race. Atomic Salsa
placed 13th overall.
Fleet 5 had some top finishers
at the 12-mile, 115-boat Boston Harbor Islands Race. Hi-Tops (Steve Kavanagh) was second in Class F and seventh overall. Thunderation
was third in Class C, 23rd overall and 2nd in the Masters Division.
The competition got
a little spicy at times – Flying Gull crashed into Thunderation in July during a Twilight Race – putting both boats temporarily out of commission. In September,
Chikanery slammed into Mysterious Ways during the Great Chase Race which resulted in a broken mast for Mysterious Ways and the Fleet’s Broken Prop Award
for Chikanery.
Off the race course, we
lost two members of the Fleet 5 family. Sarah MacLeod, Ken’s mother, passed away in August. The Flying Gull has been in the MacLeod family since the 1960’s when Sarah crewed alongside her husband, the
late Dr. Don “Doc” MacLeod. Sarah was a fixture on Thunderbird family cruises in the 70’s and 80’s
as well.
John Riley, former owner
of #848 Breezy II, passed away last month after a long battle with cancer. John
was back out on the race course in June & July for the Twilight Series with his good friend, Henry Pinson, the current
owner of #848 (now Cecily).
Both Sarah and John are
missed but fondly remembered.
In other news, Sean
Kane was installed as vice president of ITCA last January. The Gilson’s hosted their annual Fleet 5 Pot Luck in April.
The new spinnakers arrived in time for the racing season. The Mass. Bay
fleet was represented at the Victoria Internationals by the team of Peter, Carol and Ethan Gilson and Ken MacLeod. In October,
Peter Gilson and Steve Kavanagh took possession of the last two Spar Tech masts with a big helping hand from Jon Lee (Draco) and his truck. The 2007 season was celebrated last month at the annual awards dinner.

Meanwhile, in Fleet 5 "South"... Bob Larsen
of Easton, MD, dominated the PHRF B Fleet at St. Michael's Dinghy Club in St. Michael's, MD in #1144 Blew Bird.
